Earthworks

Many artists create paintings and sculptures that are meant to be seen in a gallery or a museum. But some artists use only materials from nature, and create their art outside. This kind of art is called Earthworks or Land Art, and it can be very cool!

One of the most famous Earthworks is in Utah! The Spiral Jetty is a very large structure that was built in the Great Salt Lake years ago.

One artist, Andy Goldsworthy, makes very delicate, careful structures out of ice, sticks, leaves, or whatever he finds. You can watch this video to see him work.

For this project, go outside and look around. Gather some sticks and rocks and leaves. Look for a place that you can change in some way. Maybe there is a tree that you can hand things from. Think about the shapes and patterns you can make. You may decide to include some materials from inside your house, like string or tape.

Send us a picture of what you make! (you can email stuff to davidcowley@gpacharter.org)
